A noisy residential garage door can be very annoying, especially if your home's garage is attached to the house, or located close to any of its main living areas. Tighten nuts

Check the nuts and other connectors on the garage door tracks and any bolts and connectors on the garage door rollers. Be sure you don't over-tighten them, which can risk stripping the nuts and bolts, but they should fit snugly against the door or the garage door frame.

Rubber stoppers

If your home's garage door is loud just when it shuts, it may need a rubber stopper at the bottom. A thick length of rubber at the base of the door can help to absorb impact and quiet any banging of scraping sounds. These rubber stoppers are typically available at any hardware or home improvement store, and you can easily attach them yourself.

Replace the rollers

After some time, the rollers of a garage door will wear down and simply need replacing. You might be able to do this job yourself, if you can access the rollers after the door is completely open. Otherwise, leave this to a professional, who can avoid any risk of injury if he or she needed to remove the door from its track.

Clean the track

If your home's garage door sounds makes a grinding or scraping sound, the problem may actually be the tracks along the doorframe. If a track is rusted, bent, or obstructed in any way, the door will scrape and grind as it operates. Clean the track with a rust cleaner and wire brush to remove any rust and debris, and check if any parts of the track are bent; you can usually move these areas back into position with a standard pair of pliers.

Insulate the door

A single skin metal garage door may make noise simply because it creates more vibration than other types of door styles. Adding insulation to the inside of the door can cushion those vibrations and keep the door quiet. A garage door contractor can add a layer of foam or other such material to the door's inside, without that insulator getting in the way of the tracks and springs or chains of the door.
